Yesterday I got out of the house to attend George Ruiz‘s “Web 2.0 Fight Club” in picturesque Clover Park in Santa Monica. I’ve been trying to attend these since he started them but it was tough when I lived in Long Beach. Now that I’m local I have zero excuses. Besides me it was Lan Bui, Alan Bernhoft and Barrett Garese.
The name is a little deceptive since it’s not like the movie of the same name. George basically lead us in some exercises to get limbered up and then walked through a bunch of the basics of boxing and Savate. The day was polished off by some light sparring I had to bow out of from sheer exhaustion. A lot of it was familiar with a few exceptions on style and stances. I did a few years of Jeet Kune Do training about 10 years ago so it was a hell of a refresher course. Back in the day I could train 2.5 hours at a shot 3 days a week and be totally fine the next day. We did about 2 hours yesterday and I have more aches and pains than I have muscles. My programmer body definitely needs some work but it was one hell of a lot of fun and hopefully George will keep doing it.
Keep your eye on http://web20fightclub.wordpress.com/ for the next session and come on out and join us.
I also apologize for the quality of photos. By the time I remembered to shoot I was so fried I didn’t pay attention to my settings and totally didn’t meter a single scene so it’s potluck day.
